Psychiatric Medication Management

  1. What is psychiatry, and how does it differ from other mental health professions? Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses who can prescribe medications and provide psychotherapy. This distinguishes them from psychologists and therapists who may offer counseling but cannot prescribe medications.

  2. How do I know if I need to see a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner? If you are experiencing persistent changes in mood, behavior, or cognition that impact your daily life, it may be beneficial to consult a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Common reasons include depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, or difficulties in coping with life events.

  3. What can I expect during the first appointment? The initial appointment typically involves a comprehensive assessment of your mental health history, current symptoms, and relevant medical history. The nurse practitioner may discuss treatment options, which could include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.

  4. Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment? In most cases, a referral is not necessary. You can schedule an appointment directly with our psychiatry practice. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage, so it's advisable to check with your insurance provider.

  5. How long is a typical appointment? Initial evaluations may last longer, typically ranging from 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up appointments are usually shorter, lasting around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your treatment plan and progress.

  6. What types of therapy and treatments do you offer? Our psychiatry practice provides a range of evidence-based treatments, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medication management, and more. The specific approach will be tailored to your individual needs.
